Building Science

A brief look into the subject Building Science
Project 1 (Case Study) : Identifying innovative passive design strategies

As a group we were assigned a green building in Singapore where we had to research on the passive design strategies and the principles and details needed for these design strategies to work best in their tropical climate. We were also assigned to identify the software and prove how the passive design strategy is effective in the chosen building

What i learned and gained from this subject:

To start with i was able to identify the environmental conditions which are related to site conditions such as climate. Furthermore, i was able to explain the effects of the sun on thermal performace of the building as well as the effects of insulation, thermall mass and air movement on thermal performance of buildings. Apart from this i also observed how different building material has different effects on heat gain or thermal environment and how to estimate the heat gain in a space and also provide solutions for it. In addition, i learned how to evaluate control of variables such as heat and ventilation and also judging the limits of acceptable or desirable conditions (thermal environment) and recommend designs that control the effects of sun on the thermal performance of buildings (shading devices).
