Building Science 2 (ARC 3413)

A brief look into the module Building science 2

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

- A4 bound technical report complete with visuals, sketches measured drawings inclusive of the detailing and documentation of your project.
- A digital summary of work on Lighting and Acoustic respectively, in a printed A3 each to be embedded in the A4 report.
- Visuals / Photos used in the submission must be clear and well communicated.
- Sketches; to provide visual documentation and communication. Therefore sketches are required to be neat, clear and annotated.
- Elevation, section and axonometric of all construction elements relevant to lighting design analysis.
- Softcopy is required to be attached with the hardcopy.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

- Able to produce a complete documentation on analysis of space in relation to lighting requirement eg. Natural and artificial lighting. (Pictures, sketches and drawing) and analysis of factors which effects the lighting design of a space.
- Explore and apply understanding of building physic eg. Lighting towards building / construction technology and building materials on existing building projects.

- Basic understanding and analysis of lighting layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Lumen method and PSALI.
- Basic understanding and analysis of acoustic design layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Reverberation time and sound transmission coefficient.

Project 1 - Lighting and acoustic performance Evaluation and design

Students are to form a group of SIX (6) to observe, evaluate, analyse and report on lighting and acoustics performance of their selected case study building. For the case study, students are to choose a building that has lighting and acoustic features that can be studied. Examples of buildings could be a; restaurant, café, lounge, auditorium, and any similar buildings.
Each group is also to produce a measured drawing with appropriate scale of the case study and include all the necessary features which effect on the lighting and acoustics conditions to the selected building.
Then the students are to carry out appraisals on day-lighting, artificial lighting, noise and sound condition (quality and quantity) in the selected case study. Their identification of adequacy of the quantity of light and sound/noise for the case study needed to be carried out objectively.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Two (2) numbers of a ‘well composed’ A2 boards (front and back) to be submitted in a clear folder each and an A4 report on the calculations to be attached with the boards submission Both the boards and report are to be submitted together.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

-To be able to show understanding of artificial lighting and daylighting strategies (PSALI) in their final design.
- To be able to solve design problems in relation to sustainability issues (natural lighting, site analysis).
- To be able to design spaces incorporating artificial and daylighting (when necessary).

Project 2 - Integration Project

This project aims to integrate students' understanding of the principles of lighting design in the context their final design project of studio 04 / 05. It will encompasses on artificial and daylighting systems also will implement the PSALI design strategies.
TASK

Each student is to identify two (2) significant spaces in their final design for implementing the artificial and the daylighting strategies (PSALI). Students are to produce to followings throughout this project:
1. A brief site analysis
2. Overall floor plan (appropriate scale)
3. Floor plans of ‘Space A’ and ‘Space B’
4. Sections of ‘Space A’ and ‘Space B’
5. Reflected ceiling plans
6. Lighting contours
7. Types of lamps to be used
8. To determine reflectance on walls, ceilings, floors
9. Daylighting calculation
10. Lumen method calculation
11. Lighting design proposal
All of the above are related to your individual building design. Within your building design, you are required to identify spaces which require artificial lighting and daylighting. Integration must be solution based and you are advised to incorporate visuals, and related diagrams. Calculations to resolve your design integrations solutions must be attached in A4 and submitted together. All kind of proposals need to have a good justification.
