Effective Public Communication
This page includes the projects which i had to complete in this subject. It also includes what i have learned by doing the assignments. Lastly, i have also highlighted my strengths and my weaknesses which i came across while doing this subject.
Class test.
Our first assignment was a class test. We were assessed on 4 chapters which were, 'The Verbal Message', 'The Nonverbal Message' , 'Listening' and 'Relationships in Process'.
Reflective entry .
By reffering to the book 'Human communication' by Tubbs&Moss for the class test, i believe that i have a better understanding of the chapters. To start with, after doing the class test, i have a better understanding of what verbal and non verbal communication is. Moreover, i also knew how the non verbal cue's differ from different cultures and how it could cause a communication problem. Apart from this, i also believe that i have a better understanding of different types of relationships and the different roles played by each individual in that relationship. I also, learned how people behave and communicate in different situations by reading through the chapters. The way i see it, this class test was very important and effective for me as i learned a lot of new things by doing it. Its also important to note that i came across my strengths and weaknesses while i was preparing for the class test. As for my strengths, i realized that most of the concepts in the chapters were very easy to understand. However, after doing the class test, i did realize one of my weaknesses, which is that i get mixed up with some of the concepts in the chapters. Therefore i believe that i should be more careful when if i come across these concepts later on. I think that the point of this class test was for us to understand the concepts better. Therefore, after doing the class test, i believe that the learning outcome of this assignment is achieved. However, in order to improve this assignment i think that more example related to the concepts should be included in the notes.
Individual Essay
For our second assignment, each one of us had to choose a question which was given by our lecturer. The question i got is, ' Conflicts when the children are in their adolescent years and how it could be solved ' . So, i focused on writing about the different conflicts that are faced by children and parents when they are in their adolescent years and how those conflicts should be solved. Below is the work i produced.
Reflective entry .
In this assignment, our learning outcomes were to explain the basic ideas of each chosen topic with reference to related theories and to prove mastery of the topic and ability to express this in the form of an academic essay with proper APA citations and referencing. Therefore by doing this assignment i believe that i was able to explain the basic idea's of the topic which i was given with by introducing theories. In addition with this, the theories that i proposed to solve the problems in my question were written as an essay. Therefore, i believe that i have learned how to include theories and idea's to solve a problem in an essay format with proper referencing and citations. Considering all this, i believe that this was a very effective assignment for me as it made me learn how to relate the concepts and theories i learned to solve a problem caused by communication. I also think it is important because these are things which we would face in real life too. One of my strengths which i realized was my ability to relate different theories from the sources to the problem which was in the question. However i also think that i provided too many solutions rather than focusing on the problem. Therefore, this is something that i am weak in and i should improve on. In conclusion, i believe that the learning strategy that i used in this assignment which is applying theories to create a solution for a problem is very effective. Mostly because, these are things which i have to come across in real life.
Group Project - Illustrations and scripts.
As a final assignment, we were given a group work to produce either a script or a comic related to one of the topics. Therefore, our group got 'verbal communication' as a topic and we were given the task to produce a comic. In our comic we decided to include 3 concepts from the topic. This is our final work.
Reflective Entry .
The learning outcomes of this project were for us to explain the basic idea's of each chosen topic and also to use situations related to the topic in the form of graphics and report and derive an informed opinion on the current state of business operation to explain the topic.This project was also given for us to prove the mastery of the topic by compilation of knowledge through graphics. To start with, by planning up a story for our comic, we learned how to apply the concepts learned to a situation. And by drawing the comics, we were able to learn how to apply these concepts graphically. So therefore, by working in a group and by doing these assignment i have learned how to create a story by applying the concepts learned and how to produce it graphically as well. While i was doing this project, i found out that, it was easy for me to work in a group and this is one of the strengths which i discovered. As for my weaknesses, i found out that i had a difficult time preparing the dialogue's in the comics and needed the help from my group members. So this is one thing which i should improve on in the future. In a conclusion, i believe that the learning strategy that we used in this assignment was very interesting and effective. We were to produce a graphical comic by applying the concepts so this gave me a better understanding of the concepts and plus, i enjoyed doing it as well.
